The exact wording for the rule mentioned in #1:
Cars are added to the train at one end of the meld (usually the right end), and the order may not be rearranged.

Bizarre, no?
Category: BoardGameGeek   [ x ] Leave a Comment
Tue, 31 Aug 2010 16:51
I recently reintroduced myself to Express, and found it to be a surprisingly-enjoyable rummy game. The rulebook, however, is not the clearest, and as such I have a couple of rules questions.

1) The rulebook mentions that when train cards are added to a train already on the table, they're "usually added to one side". I've completely ignored this, in favor of playing cards strictly to the end of the train, since that makes the most sense given the cost/benefit design of cabooses and wilds. If one could play cars at the front of a train (after the loco, of course) that would make cabooses and wilds much more powerful, and the Express bonus for having your passenger cars in the right order much easier to attain! Maybe it's locos that they're referring to...?

2) The rules mention that if a Disaster results in a solitary loco, the loco is returned to its owner's hand. But no explanation is given for how this is handled in partnership play, where by the rules partners play all of their trains together. My solution is to have the abandoned loco go to the hand of the partner whose turn comes next. And because it seems to me that a Disaster is resolved after the turn in which it was discarded, that would mean that if I play a disaster that results in a lone loco, that loco goes to my partner's hand, because he will take his next turn before I do.

3) On the subject of playing Disasters to end a turn: The rules specifically say that when a player discards a Disaster to "go out", the Disaster does not take effect. But what if the resolution of a Disaster causes me to go out? (Example: the cards in my hand all play, and all of my trains score, except for one. I play all of my playable cards and end my turn by discarding the Wreck card, destroying my non-scoring train and meeting the "go out" requirements.) I'd argue that I do not, in fact, go out, because of the rule mentioned. But I could see this one go either way.

Not me. :) I'll be happy to be finished with these as it is. It should be easy enough for anyone else to do using my template: the entire tab is a text box and graphics; you should be able to select them all together and slide 'em wherever you want.

Well, I think I'm happy with what I've got. The red border for Attack cards stays; that works really well. But I think I'll ditch the extra bits notes; they're always part of the card rules anyway. (And besides, what counts as "extra bits"? I was thinking Black Market fell into that category, but then what about cards requiring Potions?)

As for Ben's suggestion of splitting the longer FAQs across front and back, I like the idea, but I won't be implementing it. Watchtower has the smallest font at 6.5pt Times New Roman, and it's readable enough as is. I will, however, be uploading or at least supplying a link to the final .doc version (the final upload being a PDF) so that people who want to tweak the layouts to their liking have that option.

I just have to do some image optimization* and then I can generate PDFs and upload. And of course take some pictures of the final product in action.

Thanks again for the suggestions and the interest!

*Obnoxiousness: the original graphics used transparent PNGs for the expansion symbols, which kept the .doc size down around 1MB...but Adobe puked 'em up when I made the first PDFs. So I had to make individual graphics for all banner/symbol combinations, which doubled the .doc size. Had I been thinking, I would have optimized the new graphics at that point, instead of leaving them at 16 million colors. But no...

This is one of those cards.

I disagree. Vineyard handles this brilliantly:

"So you want to buy some Vineyards, eh? Going cheap! Only costs a Potion! What's that? You say the game's winding down and you've got $5 and a Potion, but only 1 Buy? Well, do you want this Vineyard or not?"

I made my first three tabs today: Adventurer, Bureaucrat, Cellar. (I picked those first 3 because their layouts are pretty much set in stone; no extra component footnotes or tiny text that I still might change.)

Anyway, this was what I did:

1. Printed the page out onto one sheet of Avery Full-Sheet Label paper.
2. Carefully creased the entire sheet down the center line of the dividers. before removing the label backing.
3. Took three plain (unlined) 3x5" index cards, laid the short end of each in the crease, pressed it to one side of the label adhesive, then folded the other half of the page over and pressed it all together.
4. Took it to the paper cutter and cut out and trimmed each divider.

And I gotta say, they look fantastic.

Yeah, Pirate Ship is the troublemaker. S'why I liked the idea of red text for the attack, and background/footnote for the extra bits.

Basically, this is what I was thinking for the extra bits:

But then I decided I didn't like the green; would it be too confusing with the Victory cards? However, I decided I really liked the red background for attacks:

Oh, and you can upload images to your personal gallery. Just go to the menus up top and do: My Geek -> Gallery. Then to post it, click the little camera icon in the post editor and enter the ID# of your image.

Thanks, guys!

I can't take credit for the FAQs, those are present on happycamper's as well. Heck, that's the main reason his dividers came to my attention in the first place (I was lamenting the fact that the rulebooks don't fit in the storage boxes.)

@Yellow:

The asterisk w/ footnotes for components was exactly what I wanted to do. But I couldn't find an asterisk placement/color that I liked, and was never happy with how the footnotes turned out.

As for the red text on the attacks, I agree that it's distracting on the page, but in practice, with only the tabs showing, it comes across much better. That said, playing with the background color is a good idea; perhaps a green background to indicate extra components, with a footnote for the specifics... I'll have to play with that idea, thanks!

Having received my new storage boxes for Dominion, I went in search of dividers. Not satisified with those available here, I designed my own. They're based on happycamper's work, but redone from scratch by myself.

Features:
- They're double-sided. Meaning you can sort your cards however you want (by type, by set, alphabetical, etc.) and still keep alternating tabs.
- The expansion set identifying symbol is prominent on each tab.
- Card types and quantities listed (just below the tab).
- Attack cards called out with red lettering.
- Improved graphics (IMHO).
- FAQ rules for each card.

Anyway, you can take a look for yourself here. It's a Word doc right now, but I'll generate PDFs when the things are completely finalized.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or can spot any errors. The only thing I wanted to add was an indicator on cards that require additional components, but I couldn't come up with anything I liked.

There is in certain ancient things a trace

Of some dim essence—more than form or weight;

A tenuous aether, indeterminate,

Yet linked with all the laws of time and space.

A faint, veiled sign of continuities

That outward eyes can never quite descry;

Of locked dimensions harbouring years gone by,

And out of reach except for hidden keys.

It moves me most when slanting sunbeams glow

On old farm buildings set against a hill,

And paint with life the shapes which linger still

From centuries less a dream than this we know.

In that strange light I feel I am not far

From the fixt mass whose sides the ages are.

The 36th and final sonnet of Lovecraft's massive poem, Fungi from Yuggoth. This piece is called "Continuity" and might be my favorite piece of verse right now. The final couplet gives me chills.
